Young women aren't usually considered to be at risk for heart attacks, but an estimated 38,000 women under the age of 50 have them each year in the U.S., according to doctors.

"It does happen, absolutely, and it's trickier when it happens because young women, or women in general, have different symptoms than what the textbooks have written in them," said Mercy internist Dr. Jonathan Rich.

According to Dr. Rich, typical symptoms of a heart attack are severe chest pains and shortness of breath, but women should look out for those and other symptoms, including tingling down the arm or leg, nausea and vomiting, a racing heart, jaw pain, dizziness, discomfort that feels like indigestion and extreme fatigue.

Those symptoms may be signaling a problem other than heart disease, but patients should still see a doctor right away if so and get the problem checked out.
