Mercy's Drs. Fermin Barrueto And Kevin Audlin First Gynecologists In The U.S. To Utilize New Articulating HD 3D Laparoscopic Surgical Video System In A Surgical Procedure
Mercy gynecologists Drs. Kevin Audlin and Fermin Barrueto, Sr., of Mercy’s Gynecology Center, Division of Endoscopy and Pelvic Reconstruction
Mercy Medical Center physicians Fermin F. Barrueto, M.D., Director of The Gynecology Center and Chief of Endoscopy and Pelvic Reconstruction, and Kevin M. Audlin, M.D., Division of Endoscopy and Pelvic Reconstruction, recently became the first gynecologists in the United States to perform a surgical procedure (for endometriosis) using the Olympus Articulating HD 3D Laparoscopic Surgical Video System.
The Olympus system reduces surgical errors and improves the speed, accuracy and precision of surgical tasks such as dissection, grasping and suturing (as compared to traditional 2D surgical systems, based on internal Olympus testing conducted using a simulated surgical model). This is accomplished by restoring natural 3D vision and depth perception when performing laparoscopic procedures and is independent of a surgeon’s skill level.
“This new 3D system facilitates suturing, in identifying tissue planes, and in various precision surgical tasks,” Dr. Barrueto said. “The articulating design provides a critical view of anatomical structures in HD 3D without losing the important visual horizon.”
“The Olympus system offers the precision, resolution, and depth perception of 3D. Anything that enhances the surgeon’s vision is always going to be a major plus,” Dr. Audlin said.
