A new study shows that when parents are health-conscious, their children likely will be, too.

The study said a mother-daughter relationship is especially important in choosing a lifestyle.

"It just showed that what mom does, daughters tend to pick up on and try to copy their healthy lifestyles or unhealthy habits," said Mercy gynecologist Dr. Christine O'Connor.

Abby Glassberg and her teenage daughter, Isabelle Staines, are both health conscious. Glassberg said it's because she tested positive for the BRCA2 gene, resulting in a hysterectomy and mastectomy.

"But I stayed active throughout that -- running, biking, swimming," she said.

Glassberg and her daughter run 5-kilometer and 8-kilometer races together.

"Mom definitely tries to eat healthy and watch portion sizes, and that rubs off on us because we watch her at dinner. When she eats out, she eats healthy, not fried stuff. We plan meals together for the week," Isabelle said.

"It can be hard to change habits if the whole family and the home environment aren't involved. If you're trying to change, it's a good idea to get everyone involved," Dr. O'Connor said.
