About the Condition

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form on or within the ovary. Women have two ovaries, located on each side of the uterus, that make female hormones and hold egg cells. Ovarian cysts are typically caused when an ovary produces too much of the female hormone, estrogen. While most ovarian cysts are harmless and shrink over time, some ovarian cysts can produce serious symptoms and should be examined by a doctor.

Symptoms & Diagnostic Process

Most ovarian cysts are harmless and do not cause any symptoms. Larger cysts may cause the following symptoms:

  • Changes in normal menstrual bleeding
  • Pelvic pain or dull back ache
  • Pain during periods
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Pain during bowel movements
  • Fullness or bloating in the lower belly

Diagnosis will typically begin with a pregnancy test and pelvic exam to determine the type and severity of an ovarian cyst. Laparoscopy, a procedure in which doctors insert a thin scope into the abdomen through a small incision, may also be used to diagnose ovarian cysts.

Treatment Options

Treatment of ovarian cysts may depend on your age, the type and size of the cyst and your symptoms. If your cyst is small and produces no symptoms, your doctor may recommend that your cyst be monitored.  If it is determined that your cyst is large, painful and/or potentially harmful, surgery may be required to remove the cyst.

The gynecologists of The Institute for Gynecologic Care at Mercy will help determine what treatment options are available for your condition.
