About the Condition

The prostate gland is located below a man’s bladder. Prostatitis is a swelling or infection in that gland which can be painful or make it difficult to urinate. Men of any age can get prostatitis and it can come on slowly or all at once. Sometimes, prostatitis is caused by a bacterial infection; sometimes, there is no particular cause.

Symptoms & Diagnostic Process

Prostatitis symptoms may vary depending on the cause of the inflammation. Symptoms may include:

  • Urge urination
  • Painful urination
  • Pain in groin, lower back, abdomen, testicles or penis
  • Painful orgasms
  • Flu-like symptoms (chills and fever)

Patients will have a comprehensive exam by our doctors including a digital rectal exam.  Other diagnostic tests may include:

  • Blood test
  • Urine and semen tests
  • Bladder tests
  • Cystoscope examination
  • Ultrasound

Treatment Options

Prostatitis is treatable but treatment will vary depending on the cause and type of prostatitis identified. Treatments can include:

  • Anti-inflammatory medicines
  • Sitz baths (sitting in a few inches of warm water)
  • Antibiotics
  • Pain medication
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Surgery

Until the condition is resolved, patients may want to stay away from spicy foods and caffeinated or acidy drinks as these foods can aggravate prostatitis.  Bicycling activities may need to be put on hold as well.
